What’s the difference between a Coach and a Facilitator?

Somatic Coaches hold a very different skillset to somatic Facilitators. Let’s dive into the differences….

Want to be the kind of practitioner that supports your clients to discover their own inner knowing (and avoid telling your clients what to)? ✋

If you’re the kind of person (like me) who strongly dislikes being told want to do, and wants to avoid the ‘know it all’ coachy stereotype in their client work, there’s one simple test you can apply…

>>> Review the ratio of who’s doing the most talking.

The ratio of practitioner: client talking reveals a LOT about the skills you’re using in your work.

If the practitioner is talking more than the client, then you’re likely not coaching. You might be instead facilitating, mentoring, or just giving advice.

If the client is doing most of the talking, then you’re probably coaching.

(After mentoring hundreds of Feminine Embodiment Coaches to master their craft, one of our school’s ninja tricks to work out if they are COACHING or doing something ELSE is to review this talking ratio.)

One’s not better than the other. But knowing the difference between them helps illuminate where we’re sitting on the spectrum of practitioners, and which skills we might next wish to gain.

In Coaching…

→ the client chooses the goal relating to a specific, real world challenge or desire
→ the client does most of the talking & finds their own answers
→ the coach using questions to spark new inquiry
→ we follow the clients pace & their personal journey to unique-to-them answers
→ often charging $$$ for their highly intimate & personalized services.

A Facilitator on the other hand…

→ guides & offer prompts to their clients relating to a concept or theme
→ the facilitator generally talks more
→ in a direction the facilitator has decided
→ the facilitator sets the pace
→ and general charges $ for their experiences

If you’ve been guiding your client in length meditations, visualizations or processes – where YOU are doing most of the talking. Then you’re facilitating.

It feels safer because
the facilitator is in control.
facilitation doesn’t require the client’s messy, nebulous inner world to take the lead.
facilitation doesn’t have to contemplate real-world, 3D, specific situations.
we don’t have to confront change in the client’s day-to-day life.

When a practitioner talks a lot, we can avoid all ^^^ this.

Do we *really* want to avoid the vulnerable, specific ways our client’s stuff is playing out in the real world?

To me, diving into this realm is where change really happens. While I’ve had some amazing experiences through embodied facilitation…

Hands down my most valuable insights & profound change in life circumstances have come from coaching (and it’s what I paid good $$$ to experience).

Most training in the embodiment space are forms of facilitation. A way to guide and explore the body with our clients – with the practitioner leading.

Stressing here that facilitation can be beautiful (when done well).

  1. It’s real. Coaching wants to talk about the recurring worry that strikes first in the morning & where your creative energy could go instead.
  1. Income. It’s far easier to coach with 20-30 clients/year than it is to market and sell 800 workshop tickets.

If you’ve been inviting clients into their body – using meditations, guided experiences, and doing a lot of talking…. But you want to help them find more of their own answers instead.

Coaching might be for you.

After graduating FECC I feel super confident in applying the Feminine Embodiment Coaching tools.

I had been coaching before and the FECC approach gives my work so much more depth and allows me to activate my body’s wisdom.

The personal mastery stream supported me in gaining more access to what I want to bring into this world. I’m also deeply motivated to get going! Thank you, Jenna and team for this wonderful and profound program.
